One Size Doesn’t Fit All — Not Even in Communication

The same cap that fits your cousin might not fit your credibility.

We’ve all seen it. The speaker who delivers the same talk, the same lines, the same jokes — whether it’s a classroom, a boardroom, or a wedding toast.

And then wonders… “Why didn’t this land the same way?”

Simple. Because communication isn’t copy-paste. It’s not a T-shirt. It’s tailoring.

Why Communication Needs Custom Fitting

You wouldn’t wear a woollen coat in summer. So why give the same communication script to every audience, every time?

Even if the topic is the same, your:

  • Audience is different

  • Occasion is different

  • Objective is different

  • Mood is different

So your approach has to be different too.

One Message, Multiple Versions

Let’s say your topic is Leadership.

  • If you're addressing CXOs, you focus on vision, agility, and growth.

  • For students, you translate it into self-leadership, confidence, and clarity.

  • Speaking to NGO volunteers? You highlight purpose, service, and resilience.

Same theme. Different entry points. Different vocabulary. Different emotion.

That’s not compromise — that’s communication maturity.

The 4 Cs of Communication Customisation

  1. Context Are you in a celebration, crisis, or classroom? Tone accordingly.

  2. Culture What does the audience value? What references will they get?

  3. Clarity of Objective Are you here to inform, inspire, instruct or influence?

  4. Capacity of Audience A 3-minute metaphor may work in one room, and fall flat in another.

Real Talk: Communication Is Like Cooking

You may know how to make the best biryani on the planet. But will you serve it to a Jain guest? Or in a 10-minute lunch break? Or at a breakfast meet?

Same with words. Same with messages.

Season it. Simplify it. Serve it right.

And Let's Be Honest…

One-size-fits-all communication is often one thing: Easy for the speaker. But rarely effective for the listener.

When you tailor your content, tone, and delivery — you signal something powerful:

“You matter. I’m not here to perform. I’m here to connect.”

Final Word:

In communication, fit matters more than fabric.

The finest message means nothing if it doesn’t fit the moment.

So next time you speak, ask yourself:

  • Who am I speaking to?

  • What do they need to hear?

  • And how can I say it in a way that sticks?

Because in communication — just like in fashion —

Tailored always makes a better impression.
