When the Roots Are Deep, the Wind Doesn’t Matter

Some people always look diffident—perplexed, unsure, almost second-guessing every step.
Others, in the very same situation, appear assured and confident.
What’s the difference?
It’s not that the confident ones always know what is happening.
Nor is it that the diffident ones always don’t know.
The difference lies deeper—beneath the surface.
In the strength of the fundamentals.
The Power of Roots
Think of a banyan tree.
A storm passes, branches may sway, leaves may scatter—but the tree itself remains unshaken.
Why?
Because its roots run deep.
Confidence works the same way.
When your foundations are strong—your values, skills, clarity of thought—you do not fear the unexpected winds.
You don’t get flustered when circumstances shift, because you’re anchored.
“When the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind.”
Anecdote: The Two Students
I once had two students preparing for the same exam.
The first was nervous, flipping through notes until the last minute, worried about what might appear on the paper.
The second sat calmly, even smiling, chatting with others.
Afterwards, I asked the calm student, “Weren’t you nervous?”
He replied, “I don’t know exactly what questions will come. But I know I’ve understood the fundamentals well. Whatever form the questions take, I’ll have something solid to rely on.”
It wasn’t arrogance. It was rooted confidence—the kind that comes not from memorization or last-minute preparation, but from internalized clarity.
Anecdote: The Workplace Meeting
In boardrooms too, this difference shows.
One manager fumbles through a presentation, worried about what the boss might ask.
Another, though equally unsure of the specific questions, speaks with ease.
Why? Because the second manager has strong fundamentals:
They know their business numbers.
They understand the customer.
They are clear about the strategy.
So when surprises come, they don’t panic.
They adapt.
Building Deep Roots
Confidence is not about knowing everything.
It is about having strong enough fundamentals to stand tall in uncertainty.
How do you build these roots?
Clarity of values: Know what you stand for.
Mastery of basics: Whether it’s your craft, your subject, or your business—get the essentials right.
Practice under pressure: Familiarity with handling challenges builds resilience.
Reflection: Regularly review what you’ve learned and how you’ve applied it.
“Confidence is not the absence of uncertainty—it is the presence of strong fundamentals.”
Closing Thought
The storm will come.
Situations will change.
The unexpected will appear.
But if your roots are deep.
If your fundamentals are strong.
There is no reason to fear the wind.
